Our gymnastics gem has her sights firmly set on the 2014 Commonwealth Games after an impressive last 18-months in the sport.
Following a successful trial period, Katie Duncan, from Bury St Edmunds, was selected
to represent Scotland last month - and will now travel north once a month for gruelling
training sessions with the national squad.
Since starting out in the gym aged seven,
the now 14-year-old has claimed a host of eye-catching titles in recent months -
raising hopes that she could represent the host nation at the Glasgow-based Games
in four years.
Father Robert Duncan, who represented Scotland in cross-country at
commonwealth level, said: "Katie's ambition is to represent Scotland in 2014, in
front of the home crowd.
"Katie is a very dedicated gymnast and I am very proud of
her. She has given up lots of other things that other teenagers of her age would
be doing."
Duncan, who trains five times a week at Bury Gymnastics Club, enjoyed
a scintillating 2009.
After claiming the senior club championship, she was crowned
county champion and then took third-spot at the Scottish all round Championship.
Soon after, she earned a team bronze medal at the British Senior Schools Championship
and secured the double at the Bury Open - winning the team and individual events.
"She
has worked very hard to achieve the standard she has reached and thoroughly deserves
her place in the Scotland squad," said Mr Duncan.
"Katie has stayed with Bury Gymnastics
Club when others have left to jin bigger clubs in the region. She has worked tirelessly,
since the age of seven, through many injuries that have not deterred her.
"She is
something of a late developer because women's gymnastics is a sport where the peak
age is not too old - but Katie is defying that by improving all the time."
Katies's training will be intense and she hopes to find a sponsor to realise her
ambition. If you would like to sponsor Duncan, email her father at Robert.Duncan@wsh.nhs.uk
